An advisory concerning Christmas Day sea swimming has been released for individuals planning a festive dip. Abby Rocky, a seafront officer for Brighton and Hove City Council, stated that cold water sea swimming is recommended exclusively for highly experienced individuals equipped with appropriate wetsuits and only when conditions are calm. Ms. Rocky further commented: “The sea will be there tomorrow – don’t take unnecessary risks that could threaten your life or others trying to help.” She clarified that since lifeguard services are not operational during this period, individuals encountering difficulties would place additional strain on emergency responders. She stated: “Winter sea conditions, cold water and strong currents can be extremely hazardous for even the most experienced sea swimmers.” Those planning to swim are urged to verify the weather forecast and sea conditions on the day, account for other members of their group, and refrain from entering the water after consuming alcohol or drugs. Ms. Rocky also noted: “Even on a calm day, sea currents, unpredictable waves or a sudden change in weather can create life-threatening hazards without warning.” Individuals who find themselves in distress in the water are instructed to remain calm and float on their back by extending their arms and legs, simultaneously moving their hands to attract attention. The public is also encouraged to dial 999 and request the coastguard if they observe anyone in peril. For those wishing to swim, the Christmas Day event at Saltdean Lido has been suggested as an alternative.
