Adidas has concluded its dispute with Kanye West, stemming from antisemitic remarks he made in 2022. These comments led to the termination of the “Yeezy” collaboration between the sports brand and the US rapper. Following the controversy, Adidas ceased the collection and began liquidating Yeezy inventory at wholesale rates. However, the company announced on Tuesday that it had reached a settlement with Mr. West, bringing an end to all legal actions between the parties. Adidas chief executive Bjorn Gulden stated during a conference call, “There [aren’t] any more open issues and there is no… money going either way.” Addressing the firm’s recent financial performance, Gulden remarked on the call, “There were tensions on many issues [but]… both parties said we don’t need to fight any more.” He further noted that the conflict with West “belongs to the past.” He elaborated, “When you have conflicts like this, you take provisions and you have legal opinions and there are negotiations and there are settlements being done, and this is the end to it.” Gulden concluded, “No-one owes anything to anybody anymore. Whatever was is history”. The termination of the collaboration resulted in Adidas holding Yeezy inventory valued at approximately €1.2bn (£840m). The sports brand is selling these products in increments and contributing the proceeds to non-governmental organizations, including its own recently established anti-discrimination foundation. The company confirmed that the remaining Yeezy stock is expected to be sold off by the close of 2024. This resolution of the dispute stands in sharp contrast to Adidas’s stance in 2022, when the company declared it does “not tolerate antisemitism and any other sort of hate speech.” The company further stated: “Ye’s recent comments and actions have been unacceptable, hateful and dangerous, and they violate the company’s values of diversity and inclusion, mutual respect and fairness.” The partnership between Adidas and Mr. West commenced in 2014, establishing a highly successful sportswear line. Even following the controversy, demand for Yeezy products persisted, with numerous Yeezy trainers achieving strong sales in the resale market, fetching prices ranging from hundreds to thousands of pounds. West’s accounts on Instagram and X (formerly Twitter) were suspended in October 2022 after he made a series of antisemitic statements. Over the subsequent two months, he reiterated these claims in various interviews and podcasts, some of which were not broadcast. In December of the same year, Mr. West appeared on conspiracy theorist Alex Jones’ program, InfoWars, where he expressed his admiration for Adolf Hitler. The rapper, who is now separated from celebrity Kim Kardashian, received a diagnosis of bipolar disorder years ago and has openly discussed his struggles with mental health.
