British music icon Adele became emotional on Saturday night as she performed her 100th and final show in Las Vegas. For the past two years, she has maintained a weekend residency at the 4,000-capacity Caesars Palace. Throughout this engagement, she frequently engaged with her audience, but has indicated that the experience proved emotionally taxing. Earlier this year, she also announced her intention to take a “big break” from music following her current series of concerts. Footage from inside the venue on Saturday showed Adele visibly moved during the concert, shedding tears as she bid farewell to Las Vegas. She stated, “I’m so sad this residency is over but I am so glad that it happened, I really, really am.” She further added, “I will miss it terribly, I will miss you terribly. I don’t know when I next want to perform again.” Adele’s Las Vegas residency was initially slated to commence in January 2022. However, it was postponed just 24 hours before the first show was due to begin, following a Covid outbreak among production staff and delays in completing the set. The residency eventually began later that year, with performances held every Friday and Saturday. Over the years, the residency featured numerous memorable instances, including Adele bursting into tears after spotting Celine Dion at her concert. The two singers subsequently shared an embrace in the Colosseum Theatre at Caesars Palace, a venue originally constructed for Dion’s debut residency in 2003. Adele is known to idolise the Canadian icon, while Dion has also spoken in glowing terms about Adele. The London-born singer — whose albums 19, 21, 25, and 30 have all achieved massive worldwide success — also garnered headlines when she defended a fan who was instructed to sit down at one of her Vegas concerts. The audience member was enthusiastically singing along to “Water Under the Bridge” when another fan seated behind him and a security guard told him he was obstructing their view. Adele noticed the situation, paused the song, and instructed the guard to “leave him alone.” The fan recorded this interaction with a selfie stick and later posted it on TikTok, also thanking the star for “standing up for me.” Nevertheless, not every Vegas concert proceeded without incident. In June, Adele angrily reprimanded an audience member who allegedly yelled “Pride sucks” during one of her shows. She scolded the individual, asking, “Did you come to my… show and just say that Pride sucks?” and added, “Don’t be so… ridiculous.” She concluded with, “If you have nothing nice to say, shut up, all right?” It later transpired that the audience member had in fact shouted “work sucks” after Adele had discussed her working week. In July, Adele, celebrated for hits such as “Rolling In The Deep,” “Hello,” “Someone Like You,” and “Easy On Me,” disclosed her intention to take an extended break from music after her current run of concerts. She informed German broadcaster ZDF, “My tank is quite empty at the minute.” She further stated, “I don’t have any plans for new music at all,” and elaborated, “I want a big break after all this and I think I want to do other creative things just for a little while.“You know, I don’t even sing at home at all. How strange is that?” Adele additionally cited her difficulties with public attention as a factor in her desire for a musical break. She remarked, “I miss everything about before I was famous, I think probably being anonymous the most.” She continued, “I like that I get to make music all the time, whenever I want to, and people are receptive to it and like it. That’s pretty unimaginable. But the fame side of it, I absolutely hate.” She concluded, “The fact that people are even interested in my songs and my voice is pretty wild. I don’t think it ever gets normal. So it’s worth it, the balance.” This career hiatus has been a consideration for some time. In 2022, Adele expressed her aspiration to pursue an English Literature degree after her final departure from Las Vegas. During a question-and-answer session with fans in Los Angeles, she stated, “If I hadn’t made it singing, I think I would be an English lit teacher.” She further commented, “I definitely think I use my passion for English lit in what I do. I wish I’d gone to university and had that experience, but I will do it online with a tutor.” She concluded, “That’s my plan for 2025, just to get the qualification”.
