A borough has identified additional Islamic burial spaces, following previous warnings that existing capacity was nearing depletion. Last month, concerns were voiced by faith leaders and politicians regarding the near depletion of available spaces for Muslims in Mays Lane cemetery in Earley and Shinfield cemetery, which were described as “almost used up”. Islamic tradition mandates that burials occur as promptly as possible following death, with graves oriented perpendicularly to the holy city of Mecca. Furthermore, it is customary for these graves to be distinct from those of other faiths. Stephen Conway, leader of Wokingham Borough Council, stated that this “critical issue” would be addressed with prompt action, and various options to expand capacity were under consideration. Currently, additional spaces have been located and are ready for use, alongside the establishment of plans for further plots in other parts of the borough. Specifically, nine burial plots have been identified within Shinfield Cemetery. The local authority indicated that plans are in place for an additional two plots, which could be made available within a month. An additional ten spaces have been located at St Sebastians, with the potential for immediate provision. The council also stated its intention to pursue further medium and long-term strategies to guarantee the future availability of burial spaces. Councillor Basit Alvi, who brought this matter to the council leader’s attention last month, expressed that he was “delighted” by the “immediate” response from the authority.
