An instructor dedicated to making surfing available for individuals with disabilities has been named the recipient of this year’s BBC South West Unsung Hero award. Ian Bennett contributes his time as a volunteer to the Croyde Surf Life Saving Club, the England Adaptive Surf team, and the community organization Access for All. Additionally, he is employed by The Wave Project charity, where he serves as the adaptive surf lead. Nicki Palmer, mother of 17-year-old George, who lives with multiple disabilities and has received assistance from Mr. Bennett, described him as “the kindest, most caring, passionate person I know.” She further stated, “What he’s doing for adaptive surfing in this country is amazing.” Palmer added, “They’re not just a team that helps him [George] get in the ocean, they’ve become friends of his.” She continued, “They know him inside out, Ian sometimes pops round the house to see him in his spare time and check he’s ok.” Andy Hawker, a lifeguard and fellow adaptive surf instructor, characterized Mr. Bennett as “a very modest man,” who “never takes any credit” for the assistance and chances he offers. Hawker remarked, “Without him we wouldn’t have adaptive surfing here.” He continued, “He’s developed the training, he’s developed the equipment and he’s constantly trying to improve all the time, so a remarkable man.” Mr. Bennett expressed his appreciation for the recognition of the efforts undertaken by him and his team. He commented, “It’s just a brilliant team that enables the beach to be so much more accessible to people. “We all get a buzz out of surfing and I think everyone should be entitled to a go at that.”” For updates, follow BBC Devon on X, Facebook and Instagram.
