Actor Diagnosed with Serious Heart Condition Following Marathon Training

Becky Shorrocks, an actor and comedian from Worthing, West Sussex, has revealed that her life-threatening heart condition was identified only after she experienced breathlessness and illness during her training for a half marathon. In 2017, Ms. Shorrocks received a diagnosis of arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy (ACM), an inherited ailment characterized by heart muscle cells failing to adhere properly. At the age of 34, Ms. Shorrocks was an avid runner who had no prior history of heart problems. She stated, “I burst into tears when it dawned on me that life was going to change.” ACM has the potential to induce hazardous heart rhythms, which can result in cardiac arrest and, in some instances, sudden cardiac death. To manage her condition, Ms. Shorrocks underwent a procedure to have an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) implanted. This compact device is designed to assist in treating dangerously abnormal and life-threatening heart rhythms. The British Heart Foundation clarified that while the actor’s ICD can restore rhythms to normal and potentially preserve her life, it does not provide a cure for her underlying condition. In 2021, the actor welcomed her daughter, expressing that she “cried tears of joy” upon learning that her child had not inherited the condition. Currently, Ms. Shorrocks is encouraging individuals to contribute to vital research focused on heart and circulatory diseases. She commented: “It’s hard to put it into words what the research means to us and what it’s given us as a family.“It’s giving us hope for the future.”
