A 31-year-old active soldier, Sophie Waugh, has pleaded guilty to causing the fatality of a 71-year-old cyclist through dangerous driving. Ms. Waugh presented herself at Teesside Crown Court this morning concerning the death of Ian Morris. The defendant, residing at Longleat Gardens, South Shields, was operating a Ford Focus on 28 June, 2023, when her vehicle collided with Mr. Morris on the A6055 close to Thirsk. Ms. Waugh, who, according to court proceedings, had given birth under a month prior, is scheduled for sentencing on 7 February. During an earlier hearing, it was disclosed that Ms. Waugh was a member of the Royal Logistics Corps within the British Army. Her bail has been extended until her subsequent court appearance, and she has been issued a temporary driving disqualification. In a prior tribute issued by North Yorkshire Police, Ian Morris’s family characterized him as a “loving husband, dad and grandfather”. Mr. Morris, who hailed from Bedale, was additionally portrayed as a “well-known and loved” individual within his community, with a passion for golfing and cycling.
