During the ongoing trial of an individual charged with the murder of his brother-in-law, evidence was presented detailing how he repeatedly assaulted his wife with a knife in the presence of their young children on the same date. Finlay MacDonald, aged 41, faces charges for the fatal shooting of John MacKinnon, 47, a father of six, at Mr. MacKinnon’s residence on Skye in August 2022. Additionally, he stands accused of attempted murder against his wife, Rowena MacDonald, at their shared family home on the island, and against Fay and John MacKenzie at a property situated in Dornie on the mainland. Mr. MacDonald has entered a plea of not guilty to all charges, asserting a special defence claiming impairment due to an abnormality of mind. Rowena MacDonald, 34, testified in court that her husband repeatedly attacked her with a knife in the presence of their children at their residence in Tarskavaig, located on the Sleat peninsula, following his suspicion that she was engaged in an affair. During the initial day of proceedings at the High Court in Edinburgh, it was stated that the couple maintained a turbulent relationship marked by his constant arguments. Mrs. MacDonald disclosed that she had been making preparations to separate from him, having viewed a house and reached out to support organizations. She recounted that on the morning of August 10, 2022, her husband appeared angry and distressed, and had confronted her. She informed the court that he had discovered messages on her mobile phone exchanged between herself and a colleague from work. Mrs. MacDonald acknowledged that the messages might have been perceived as flirty, but clarified that she was not seeking a romantic relationship. According to her testimony, he repeatedly shouted: “What’s going on?”, subsequently retrieved a knife from his pocket, and began to stab her. Mrs. MacDonald stated that she attempted to block the attacks while screaming. Their four young children approached the kitchen doorway, and he continued to stab her as she attempted to exit the residence, but the back door was secured. She testified that she recalled reaching for her phone to alert emergency services. Her children remained by her side as her strength progressively diminished. Mrs. MacDonald recounted hearing her husband make multiple journeys to and from their vehicle before departing. She was subsequently transported to a hospital via air ambulance. The judicial proceedings, presided over by Lady Drummond, are ongoing and are anticipated to conclude within two weeks.
