It has come to the attention of BBC Scotland News that Aberdeen Football Club has pulled its application for a temporary alcohol permit. This permit was sought for a trial pre-match fan zone situated outside Pittodrie Stadium. The club had submitted this request for an occasional licence to the city council, intending to host an event prior to the St Johnstone match scheduled for Saturday, December 7. Alcohol service was planned to occur from 12:00 PM until 2:45 PM, preceding the 3:00 PM kick-off time. In a statement, Aberdeen City Council confirmed: “The application has now been withdrawn.” Aberdeen FC has been approached for a statement regarding this development. Supporters of the home team were to be offered the opportunity to obtain a complimentary ticket for the fan zone via the club’s official ticketing platform. Aberdeen’s objective has been to enhance supporter engagement and the overall match day experience. Over the weekend, Aberdeen’s undefeated streak in the Scottish Premiership concluded with a 2-1 loss against St Mirren. The Dons currently hold the second position in the Scottish Premiership standings. The sale of alcoholic beverages inside football grounds in Scottish football is already constrained by the Criminal Justice (Scotland) Act 1980, a law that has forbidden such sales for over four decades. Corporate hospitality zones are granted an exception to this rule. Other football clubs in Scotland have previously conducted comparable trials. In Scotland, alcohol is accessible at various other sports events, including rugby fixtures. A spokesperson for the Scottish government stated: “We have no plans to change the ban on alcohol sales at Scottish football grounds.” “We regularly meet with the Scottish Professional Football League to discuss a wide range of issues, including the sale and consumption of alcohol at football matches. We will continue to engage with the football authorities, supporters’ groups and clubs on ways to enhance the fan experience.”
