Bluey is celebrating her initial Christmas with her new family, a year after being discovered abandoned and tethered on a golf course. The Staffordshire bull terrier’s day is set to include gifts and “cuddling on the sofa” alongside Emily and James Wathey, who welcomed her into their home in January. The couple, residing in Bingham, Nottinghamshire, determined that the three-year-old dog was “the one” for them after learning of her discovery by a member of the public on 25 December 2023. At the time of her discovery, she was known as Bella and described as “extremely skinny”. Babbington Hall Kennels and Rescue took her in, and it was there that Mr and Mrs Wathey first encountered her. The Watheys had experienced the loss of their prior rescue dog, also coincidentally named Bella, several months preceding Christmas. Mrs Wathey stated, “We did go away last Christmas because it was quite difficult.” She added, “We just wanted to be away from the house.” Upon their return home, they encountered Bluey’s narrative and perceived it as “meant to be”. Mrs Wathey recounted, “We saw the BBC News article and as soon as we saw her face we thought ‘she’s the one’.” Mrs Wathey, 32, mentioned that a veterinarian informed them Bluey had been utilized for breeding purposes and was “dumped” once she was no longer capable of producing litters. Consequently, they chose to rename her and provide her with a “fresh start”. Given her use by breeders during her early years, Mrs Wathey expressed uncertainty regarding Bluey’s exposure to other experiences. “We don’t think she had even been on a lead before,” she commented. She continued, “This might be her first proper Christmas. I don’t think she had owners who celebrated Christmas with her before.” To enhance the day’s significance, the couple prepared wrapped presents for Bluey, anticipating she might unwrap them herself. The Watheys indicated further surprises are scheduled for Bluey’s fourth birthday on 2 January.
