A significant road upgrade initiative in Somerset has been “cancelled” in conjunction with the new Labour government’s inaugural budget. National Highways had previously intended to expand the A358 to a dual carriageway, connecting the Southfields roundabout in Ilminster with Junction 25 of the M5 in Taunton. This substantial A-road enhancement was initially “paused” in July; however, Chancellor Rachel Reeves has now confirmed its cancellation, characterizing the undertaking “as unaffordable and unfunded.” Chris Winter, representing West of England Developments, stated: “This road link upgrade was critical for businesses across the Somerset East-West link.” The initiative, projected to incur costs of £328m for its completion, would have involved the construction of new junctions to connect the dual carriageway with the A378 leading towards Langport, as well as with the villages of Hatch Beauchamp and Ashill situated along the current path. Mr. Winter further commented: “This decision to cancel the scheme will stall investment into Somerset for local businesses.” He added that “It will cost businesses and people who have to commute on this link.” Somerset Council expressed that they are “disappointed” by the choice to abandon the project. Keith Irvine, a resident of Henlade for three decades, conveyed to BBC Radio Somerset: “It’s a huge shame.” He recounted: “One morning I was sat at the bus stop and I counted 50 trucks at 6.30am – in just five minutes.” He concluded: “I’ll probably be dead by the time it’s done! The road has gone way past its sell-by date and needs improving.” For updates, follow BBC Somerset on Facebook and X. Story suggestions can be sent via email or WhatsApp at 0800 313 4630.
