Delays were experienced in both directions on a principal route in East Sussex due to multiple collisions and an oil spill. The A27 has since reopened westbound, following its closure on Tuesday morning between the A277 and B2123. During the period of closure, National Highways reported seven miles of traffic congestion on the approach, leading to delays of up to 70 minutes. A separate collision on the eastbound carriageway, occurring on the same section of road, also resulted in the closure of one lane and the accumulation of five miles of congestion. A spokesperson for Sussex Police confirmed: “Emergency services have responded to collisions on the A27 between Lewes and Falmer on Tuesday morning.” The spokesperson added, “At 07:30 GMT there was a report of animals in the road on the westbound carriageway.” They further noted, “A collision involving three vehicles was reported on this carriageway at a similar time, and the carriageway was closed.” Subsequently, “Then at about 08:00 GMT there was a further collision involving three vehicles on the eastbound carriageway.” The statement concluded, “The A27 has now reopened in both directions.”
