A traffic management system on a segment of the A1 in West Yorkshire will be temporarily removed to alleviate congestion leading up to the holiday season and extending into the new year. National Highways announced that the contraflow system, located between Barnsdale Bar and Ferrybridge, which enables vehicles to travel in the reverse direction, is scheduled for removal starting Saturday. This arrangement was established for repairs and enhancements to Wentbridge Viaduct and Wentedge Road Bridge and is slated for reinstallation in January. The comprehensive project is anticipated to reach completion by late summer 2025. National Highways further stated that two lanes will operate northbound between Barnsdale Bar and Ferrybridge from Saturday morning, and southbound from 21 November. The northbound carriageway will revert to a single lane on 4 January, with the southbound carriageway following suit on 8 January. To facilitate the contraflow’s removal, the northbound carriageway will undergo closure on 15 November, from 20:00 to 06:00 GMT. The southbound carriageway will be closed during these identical hours on 17, 18, 19, and 20 November. Overnight closures for the reinstallation of traffic management are planned for the northbound lanes on 3, 5, and 6 January, and for the southbound lanes on 7, 8, and 9 January. National Highways also indicated that 10 January has been designated as an additional contingency date for southbound closures. Separately, a distinct project has commenced between the A1(M) junctions 38 (A638 Redhouse) and A1 junction 39 (A639 Barnsdale Bar), aimed at upgrading the safety barrier and lighting in that vicinity. This particular initiative is projected to conclude by March 2025.
