Motorists in Somerset have encountered challenging conditions following overnight snowfall. The Met Office has issued a yellow warning, cautioning about potential blizzard-like weather. Drivers in the vicinity of the A303 near Ilminster have described visibility as a ‘white curtain’. While elevated regions face a higher risk, forecasters indicate that lower-lying areas are also being impacted. Somerset Council has activated a Severe Weather Emergency Protocol, which includes providing shelter for rough sleepers as temperatures drop sharply. Somerset Travel reported on X that difficult conditions were observed around the A30 in the Crewkerne and Yeovil areas. Rosie Hather from the homeless charity Arc in Taunton, stated their aim is to get people into accommodation “as quickly as possible”. She described the situation, saying, “It’s really nasty conditions out there.” Hather further elaborated, “We’re cold putting our heating on indoors but if you’re forced to sleep outside it’s hideous.” Somerset Council is providing additional emergency accommodation for individuals experiencing homelessness. Jeremy Payne, who resides high up on Exmoor between Porlock and Lynmouth, commented that the snow arrived “barrelling out of nowhere” and accumulated “rather dramatically”. Mr Payne added, “We’re used to it and it’s part of our life out here.” He also mentioned, “The most we’ve ever been stuck out here recently has been four or five days.” For updates, follow BBC Somerset on Facebook and X.
