Kemi Badenoch has strongly affirmed her aversion to sandwiches, stating to the BBC that she was “happy with my unique choices”. During an interview with The Spectator, the Conservative leader declared: “I’m not a sandwich person. I don’t think sandwiches are a real food, it’s what you have for breakfast.” These remarks initiated a minor political disagreement, with the prime minister’s spokesman characterizing sandwiches as a “great British institution”. When questioned about her position during a visit to a factory in Essex, Badenoch commented: “I find it fascinating how interested people are in what I have for lunch.” She further stated: “I got asked what I like to eat and I answered the question which is something Keir Starmer doesn’t do.” She then emphasized: “But more seriously, we do need to focus on the things going wrong in country right now.” When further questioned on the topic, she remarked: “We all have individual tastes and unique preferences.” She continued: “This world where we try and make everyone the same and then complain if a politician says something that might be different is quite wrong.” Badenoch concluded: “I am someone who is happy with my unique choices, everyone should be, and we should celebrate those differences.” During her discussion with The Spectator, Badenoch additionally mentioned that she was “not a lunch person”. Citing the investor Gordon Gekko from the film Wall Street, she asserted that “lunch is for wimps”. She elaborated: “I have food brought in and I work and eat at the same time… sometimes I will get a steak.” Furthermore, she stated that she avoids bread if “it is moist”. Energy Secretary Ed Miliband, who faced public mockery after being photographed consuming a bacon sandwich in 2015, informed Sky News that he desired to “have a cross-party consensus here with Kemi Badenoch, but I can’t”. He added: “You know, I think I need to persuade her of the delights of a bacon sandwich.” In response to inquiries about Badenoch’s remarks, a No 10 spokesman indicated that the prime minister was “surprised to hear that the leader of the opposition has a steak brought in for lunch”. The spokesman concluded: “The prime minister is quite happy with a sandwich lunch.” Copyright 2024 BBC. All rights reserved. The BBC disclaims responsibility for the content of external websites.
