Alex Dombrandt achieved a hat-trick at Twickenham Stoop, building on his try from the first round of the Investec Champions Cup against Racing 92. The final scores were: Harlequins (19) 53, with tries from Murley (3), Care, Dombrandt (3), and Riley; conversions by Smith (3) and Evans (2); and a penalty by Smith. The Stormers (6) scored 16 points, with a try from Mars; a conversion by Matthee; penalties by Matthee (2); and a drop-goal by Matthee. Alex Dombrandt and Cadan Murley each secured hat-tricks, enabling Harlequins to decisively defeat a depleted Stormers team and revitalize their Investec Champions Cup campaign. Following a previous away match against Racing 92 where they earned no points, Harlequins required a victory at home and maintained control over their South African opponents throughout the game at Twickenham Stoop. Harlequins initially started slowly but subsequently discovered their characteristic attacking prowess, even after Irne Herbst received a yellow card, reducing them to 14 men. Danny Care and Dombrandt then added to Murley’s initial try. The Stormers, playing without Springbok fly-half Manie Libbok and featuring five new players, faced additional challenges due to three yellow cards issued against them in the second half as the game intensified. Dombrandt secured Harlequins’ bonus-point try early in the second half, initiating a scoring surge. The number eight then added another score before Murley completed his own hat-trick. Replacement hooker Sam Riley concluded the scoring for Harlequins, pushing their total past 50 points, on what was a difficult evening for the South African team, whose only try was scored late by JC Mars. Danny Wilson’s team advanced to third place in Pool Four and is scheduled to play Toulon in January. Meanwhile, the Stormers have yet to earn any points and possess minimal chances of progressing to the next stage of the competition. Even with a weakened squad, the Stormers initially took the lead through two early penalties from Jurie Matthee, prior to winger Murley powerfully forcing his way over in the corner for a try. The visiting team nearly scored the length of the field after intercepting an errant cross-field kick from Care but failed to capitalize on the chance. They then squandered another opportunity when Matthee’s drop-goal attempt veered off course towards the corner flag. Herbst received a yellow card for a high tackle on Springbok Salmaan Moerat, but Harlequins eventually established their attacking rhythm midway through the half. Luke Northmore executed an excellent outside-to-in run from a line-out, and in the subsequent play, Tyrone Green came close to scoring, before Care’s deceptive “show-and-go” move allowed him to cross the try-line. The 37-year-old former England scrum-half, Danny Care, then became an assist provider at the close of the first half, delivering a well-timed delayed pass that enabled Dombrandt to comfortably score the third try. Following the halftime interval, the Stormers’ scrum-half Stefan Ungerer was issued a yellow card. Shortly after, Dombrandt emerged successfully from a catch-and-drive play, securing the bonus point. The England number eight, Dombrandt, had completed his three scores just before the hour mark, at which point the Stormers were reduced to 13 players when Seabelo Senatla received a yellow card while Ungerer was still off the field. Their challenging evening worsened further as Angelo Davids was also sin-binned in the 68th minute. Murley’s rapid succession of two tries accounted for Harlequins’ seventh and eighth scores, with Dombrandt setting up the latter. Subsequently, Riley also contributed to the scoring, and JC Mars recorded a late consolation try for the Stormers. The team lineups were as follows: Harlequins: Green; Isgro, Beard, Northmore, Murley; Smith, Care; Baxter, Walker, Kerrod, Herbst, Hammond, Cunningham-South, Chisholm, Dombrandt (c). Replacements: Riley, Jones, Lewis, Browne, Kenningham, Evans, Porter, Evans.
