Joe Thomas has progressed from a novice in Cymru South to a League Two player, following a period registered with Swansea City. After his EFL debut, which he described as a “special moment,” Thomas indicated that his time with the Swans was fundamental to his advancement into Newport County’s first team. The 22-year-old made his initial appearance for the Exiles as a substitute in the 62nd minute during Saturday’s commendable goalless draw against Notts County. He can now be considered a fully established EFL player, an objective he has pursued since departing Cambrian & Clydach Vale – now known as Cambrian United – to join Swansea in January 2022. Thomas explained, “I’d only just gone up to the first team with Cambrian in the summer and by Christmas I signed for Swansea.” He further stated, “As a club, the way Swansea like to play has benefited me massively. Any team that wants to play like we are trying to play now… I have done that every day at Swansea for two-and-a-half years so that has helped me massively.” Thomas, who is versatile across the right flank but prefers playing as a wing-back, joined Swansea’s under-21 squad. He left the Championship club in the summer without making a senior appearance. He secured a two-year contract with Newport, although his initial period at Rodney Parade was complicated by an ankle injury. However, after making his first senior appearance in the EFL Trophy defeat at Reading earlier this month, the Rhondda-born Thomas was given a significant opportunity by head coach Nelson Jardim at Meadow Lane. He commented, “I started in the cup game a couple of weeks back and I thought I played well.” Thomas added, “I didn’t want to boost my ego or anything like that, but I thought hopefully I will get a chance in the league soon. Now that has come. It was a surreal moment, but I am really happy.”
