Following Cardiff City’s defeat to Preston North End, Iwan Roberts has stated that the club must improve its performance to avoid relegation. The Bluebirds suffered a home loss to a Preston side that had not secured an away victory all season prior to their midweek visit to Wales. This recent defeat led to Omer Riza’s squad being booed off the pitch, placing them in the Championship’s bottom three ahead of their upcoming match against Stoke City on Saturday. On this week’s Feast of Football podcast, Roberts, a former Wales striker, commented on the team’s display, stating: “There’s a lack of energy. they are pedestrian – they have become so predictable.” He further criticized the players, observing: “Some of the players are playing like prima donnas at the minute. They look scared of making mistakes. They are not going into certain areas just in case they get the ball [because] if they make a mistake, they get a negative reaction from the supporters.” Roberts expressed skepticism regarding Riza’s explanation that player fatigue was a factor, despite a period of improved form after Erol Bulut’s dismissal, during which the team accumulated 14 points from seven games. However, since that period, Cardiff has gone six matches without a win, causing them to drop from 17th to 22nd in the league standings. Roberts additionally remarked: “I think they have got too good a squad to go down, but there have been better squads who have been relegated from this division.” He warned: “If they don’t sharpen up, they are going to be bang in trouble.” He also recalled a previous close call two years prior, when the team narrowly avoided relegation “by the skin of their teeth” due to Reading’s points deduction, noting that they are now facing “a similar situation.”
