The extensive, multimillion-pound renovation of the Hull Maritime Museum has encountered a delay. The project, which commenced in 2021 as part of a broader £27.5m initiative to revitalize the city’s maritime heritage, was initially slated for a 2025 reopening. However, a recent press release from Hull City Council now indicates that the museum is “expected to reopen in spring 2026”. According to a council spokesperson, certain sections of the structure “have required further attention.” Located in Queen Victoria Square, the building, which previously served as a docks office, houses thousands of artifacts related to marine history, such as whale skeletons, various artworks, and models depicting renowned Hull ships. A spokesperson for Hull City Council stated: “We’re all eager to see the refurbished Maritime Museum open and the council is working with contractors to get the job done to the best possible standard, as soon as possible. “While the contractors have worked incredibly hard on the building so far, some areas have required further attention.”The refurbishment of the historic museum will showcase our city’s rich maritime story. “We’re really excited to welcome local residents and visitors from around the world, but we have to be led by our contractors and architects who have said extra work needed to be done.” The broader Maritime City project also encompasses the renovation of the former North End Shipyard, situated on the River Hull, which is intended to become a new visitor attraction. Upon its completion, this site will accommodate the Arctic Corsair, a sidewinder trawler from the 1950s. A new “maritime route” will connect the maritime museum and the shipyard, traversing Queens Gardens public park, which itself is undergoing a £21m redevelopment.
