An individual described as “dangerous” has been incarcerated for six years and nine months after repeatedly striking another man on the head with a hammer in what was characterized as a “prolonged and persistent” assault. Craig Jones, aged 32, residing at Station Road, Mablethorpe, bound his victim and confined him in a cupboard after gaining entry to the victim’s residence on Christopher Road, Alford, at approximately 01:00 GMT on April 5. During previous proceedings at Lincoln Crown Court, Jones asserted that he was conducting a “revenge attack” due to a prior history between him and the victim. However, Judge Catarina Sjolin Knight rejected the claim of a revenge attack and imposed an extended sentence on Jones, having determined him to be a dangerous offender. This sentence mandates that Jones will be subject to an extended two-year license period upon his release from prison. David Eager, representing the prosecution, stated that Jones perpetrated the assault after being granted entry into the victim’s residence shortly after midnight. Mr. Eager commented, “Mercifully the injuries were not as bad as they could have been.” He added, “But he (Jones) tied him up and put him into a cupboard.” Testimony presented in court indicated that the victim sustained substantial bruising to his head and eyes, along with a 4cm laceration to his scalp. An impact statement, presented aloud in court, conveyed that the victim continues to experience nightmares and had never encountered an incident of this nature previously. The court was informed that Jones possessed a history of prior convictions, including a substantial prison term for aggravated burglary. Jones pleaded guilty to a charge of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm in connection with the event. He further admitted a secondary charge of theft, concerning a bank card and cash removed from the victim. During mitigation, the court heard Jones’s assertion that he lost his temper subsequent to a remark made by the victim. When delivering the sentence, Judge Catarina Sjolin Knight informed Jones: “You hit him at least six or seven times with the hammer, then used speaker cables to tie him up and put a piece of cloth in his mouth.” She continued, “You then dragged him out of the room you were in and put him in a linen cupboard.” The judge added, “He was there for 20 minutes until he found the toolkit he kept inside.”
