A substantial sculpture has been installed near the previous location of a Black Country steelworks, marking its 125 years of operation. This establishment, the former Round Oak Steelworks in Brierley Hill, was a significant source of employment for the town, operating between 1857 and 1982. The 14-foot (4m) sculpture, created by Dudley borough artist Steve Field, is now exhibited at the intersection of Dudley Road and John Street. Mr. Field expressed that it was an honour to contribute to the sculpture, which portrays a vessel suspended mid-air, dispensing molten metal. He also noted the considerable interest shown by Black Country residents in the steelworks during his research phase for the project. He informed BBC Radio WM, “People came forward with memorabilia – books and objects associated with the steelworks.” Among these commemorative items were blue spectacles, utilized for worker eye protection, and various manuals. Mr. Field stated that he donated these items to Dudley Museum for their safekeeping and preservation. According to information on the National Archives website, the Round Oak enterprise commenced as an iron works in 1857, initially owned by the Earl of Dudley. A steel manufacturing facility was incorporated into its premises during the late 19th century, leading to an increased emphasis on producing the alloy. The recently unveiled sculpture, situated near the former entrance of the steelworks, has encouraged individuals to post their family ties to the facility on social media platforms. One Facebook user commented, “Fantastic – about time Round Oak and all its men were remembered. My dad and lots of great men worked there.” Further updates from BBC Birmingham can be accessed via BBC Sounds, Facebook, X, and Instagram.
