North Yorkshire Council has announced a £630,000 project to resurface streets surrounding Ripon’s market place. This road repair program in the cathedral city has been scheduled to prevent interference with upcoming Remembrance Day and Christmas events. The initial phase of the project is set to commence on Monday, concentrating on the eastern section of the square. This timing is intended to facilitate the Christmas lights switch-on and the Armistice parade. The council confirmed its collaboration with local businesses and councillors to establish the project’s schedule. Concrete blocks currently on roads around the market place will be substituted with an asphalt surface, although these blocks will remain in specific locations, such as the taxi rank. Businesses, motorists, and visitors have been advised of a complete road closure in the eastern vicinity. Access to the western side of the market place, including the car park, will remain open. Councillor Andrew Williams, who represents the Ripon Minster and Moorside ward, stated: “It has long been recognised that these roads needed to be repaired.” He added, “There would never be a perfect time to undertake a scheme of this magnitude and the sooner it is started the sooner it will be completed.” The second phase of the initiative is scheduled to begin in early 2025, encompassing the remaining portions of the market square, along with Kirkgate and Duckhill. All construction is anticipated to conclude by the spring. Keane Duncan, the council’s executive member for highways and transport, commented: “Some archaeological finds have been made in the vicinity when past works were carried out, so we will ensure the site is monitored carefully throughout the scheme.” He further assured, “We will of course keep the public, city council, businesses and local councillors updated as we progress.” A clearly marked diversion route will be established for the duration of the works, and pedestrian access will be maintained.
