Police uncovered stolen vehicles, with a total value exceeding £400,000, at a “chop shop,” among which were luxury models like a Porsche and a Mercedes. The discovery of the “chop shop”—defined as a garage used for disassembling stolen vehicles or altering their identities—was made by Essex Police. This followed information provided by the Met Police regarding a stolen car under surveillance on December 9. Law enforcement personnel located the vehicle, identified as a Mercedes GLC, within an enclosed yard situated in the Uttlesford area, close to Stansted Airport. Subsequent searches conducted at an adjacent unit revealed an additional 17 vehicles, all connected to thefts reported across London, Hampshire, Surrey, and Kent. Two individuals from Romford, located in east London, were taken into custody on suspicion of vehicle theft and handling stolen property. The police force stated that these men, aged 35 and 38, have been granted bail until March 1 as investigations proceed. Detective Chief Inspector Rob Huddleston commented that the force conducts operations targeting “chop shops” in Essex “on a weekly basis.” He stated: “This type of premises, known as a chop shop, has without doubt, links to wider organised crime groups who use similar premises to move stolen vehicle parts across the county and further afield for their own gain.” He further added: “Theft of motor vehicles is a force priority, and we will continue to do all we can to tackle those involved in organised vehicle theft, to protect our communities from the devastating effects such a theft can have on their daily lives.”
