Sheffield Wednesday defender Di’Shon Bernard has expressed a significant increase in his self-confidence leading up to Tuesday night’s Yorkshire derby against his former team, Hull City. The 24-year-old recently scored his first goal in 101 EFL games during Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Cardiff City at Hillsborough, with his last goal having been for Salford City against Mansfield Town in January 2021. Speaking to BBC Radio Sheffield, Bernard admitted, “I wasn’t happy with the way I started to be honest, I wasn’t really quite up to speed.” He continued, “I never had the full pre-season but I’m feeling much better, I’m much more confident in my performances now.” The Jamaican international has participated in every league minute for the Owls for which he has been available since receiving a red card in the 2-1 defeat to Luton Town in September. He believes he is now approaching his optimal form. Bernard further stated, “I’m looking much better on the ball, much better defensively.” He added, “I’m always trying to keep working hard and improving. Hopefully, I can stay consistent with these performances.” Bernard is set to return to Hull, where he spent the 2021-22 season on loan from Manchester United. During that period, which marked his inaugural season in the Championship, he made 28 appearances. He concluded by saying, “It’s always nice going back to the MKM. It should be an interesting game but hopefully we can win.”
