Additional bus services are being incorporated into York’s timetables to encourage both visitors and residents to utilize public transportation during the festive season. The City of York Council reports that over 40 routes currently serve the city, its surrounding villages and towns, and key shopping destinations such as the Designer Outlet. An adult fare cap of £2 is in effect until December 31, with accompanied children traveling free and unaccompanied teenagers paying £1. The council also announced the suspension of major roadworks during the Christmas period, an action intended to alleviate congestion. This initiative, funded by the city’s bus service improvement plan, is a collaborative effort involving the City of York Council, Make It York, and each of the city’s seven bus operators. Many operators have increased the number of buses on principal routes throughout November and December, including additional vehicles for the park and ride services. James Gilchrist, director of transport, environment and planning, expressed hope that the scheme would reduce congestion and offer more affordable transport options. Mr Gilchrist stated: “York is rightly famous for its Christmas market and thriving independent shopping scene, and we are working with partners, including bus operators to reduce congestion at a time when so many people come to enjoy York.” He further explained that the objective was to maintain urban mobility by encouraging people to use public transport. He added: “Just one double-decker bus can carry up to 75 people, so imagine how much better it will be if everyone who can travel by bus does so this Christmas.”
