Approval has been granted for enhancements to the spa facilities at a luxury hotel that aims to host the esteemed Ryder Cup golf tournament. The Arora Group, owner of the Luton Hoo Hotel, situated just south of the town, had previously secured authorization to construct an additional golf course, which it anticipates could ultimately accommodate the US v Europe golf competition. As reported by the Local Democracy Reporting Service, Arora presented comprehensive plans and a request for listed building consent to Central Bedfordshire Council, proposing an expansion of the spa located within the site’s former stables building. The council’s development management committee subsequently gave unanimous approval to both the proposed development and the distinct application for listed building consent. The hotel’s proprietor had previously indicated an aspiration to host the biennial Ryder Cup in either 2031 or 2035. It was also stated that professional golfers Gary Player and Justin Rose were assisting in the design of the new course, with intentions to establish a Justin Rose academy at the location. An announcement in 2023 revealed that Luton Hoo would undergo several years of redevelopment efforts with the aim of becoming part of the luxury brand Fairmont Hotels & Resorts. Other establishments within the Fairmont portfolio include The Savoy in London and the Fairmont in St Andrews, recognized as the “home of golf” in Scotland. The report presented to the council committee detailed that the modernization efforts encompass a spa renovation, modifications to the listed Adams building, the construction of a new pavilion, the addition of new tennis and padel courts, and the establishment of a children’s play area within Columnhill Woods. Caroline Macrdechian, Central Bedfordshire’s principal planning officer, informed councillors, stating: “This would bring the prestige of a Fairmont hotel to the authority.” Due to its location within the green belt, the development remained contingent on referral to the communities secretary. The report highlighted concerns regarding the potential impact on heritage and the removal of trees. Kevin Collins, the Conservative councillor representing nearby Caddington, commented: “The longer term plan will see a relaunch as a premium destination. This will be a great asset to south Bedfordshire.” He added: “I don’t dismiss any of the concerns raised in the report. I agree in principle with many of them.” Surinder Arora, founder and chairman of the Arora Group, characterized all the proposed enhancements at the location as a “once in a lifetime opportunity.” He stated: “Originally we thought we might spend up to £50m. The dream has been getting bigger and we’re looking at an investment of £160m to £170m, while creating more than 350 extra jobs.” Arora also mentioned: “The lake is badly silted, so we’ll clean it up, and the River Lea.” He further noted that “[As] one of the five-star brands, Fairmont suggested it couldn’t open there without the luxury spa.” Post navigation Brent Knoll Village Shop Reopens Following Pandemic Closure Ferguson Marine’s Interim Chief Executive Extends Tenure Amid Search for Permanent Replacement
