Northern Ireland has not participated in a World Cup since 1986. Manager Michael O’Neill stated that he would have welcomed his side’s World Cup qualifying pool even before the draw, and he believes that being in a four-team group is advantageous. Northern Ireland is set to compete against either Italy or Germany, in addition to Slovakia and Luxembourg, as they pursue qualification for the 2026 World Cup, which will be hosted in the USA, Canada, and Mexico. In March, Italy and Germany will participate in a Nations League quarter-final match, and the victor of this game will be placed in Northern Ireland’s qualifying group. Teams drawn against nations competing in the Nations League knockout stages were assigned to four-team groups instead of five-team groups and are scheduled to commence their qualification campaign in September 2025. O’Neill commented, “I think it suits us a little bit better.” He elaborated, stating, “It gives us a little bit more preparation time and it just means you’ve less games, injuries and suspensions and stuff like that tend to catch up with you the more games you play.” He concluded, “I think the way the group has come up, we would have taken that before the draw.” O’Neill noted that regardless of whether their opponent is Italy or Germany, Northern Ireland will be contending with one of global football’s “powerhouses.” Only the top team in the group will secure automatic qualification for the tournament, while the second-placed team will advance to a play-off bracket. Having already secured victory in their Nations League group, Northern Ireland also retains a potential second pathway into these play-offs. O’Neill further stated, “Obviously a huge challenge to for us to finish top of the group, but there is a play-off route.” He continued, “We’ve already given ourselves a chance of that with our Nations League group as well, so there’s a lot for us to go in with a lot of positivity. “We know we’ll be competitive in this group. There’s no doubt about that. We just have to make sure we continue with the progression of the team.” During his second tenure managing the national team, O’Neill has predominantly deployed a youthful squad, significantly depending on players including Conor Bradley, Shea Charles, Trai Hume, and Isaac Price. The team delivered a notable performance in October, defeating Bulgaria 5-0 at Windsor Park, which contributed to them finishing first in their third-tier Nations League group. This achievement reflects a consistent improvement observed over the last 14 months. Nevertheless, some inconsistencies, typical of less experienced players, have been present. O’Neill indicated that the extended period before the commencement of their qualifying campaign will be advantageous for his young squad. He also perceives the absence of competitive matches at the conclusion of the club season as a benefit. He clarified, “We’ve got March and June to hopefully put together a set of [friendly] fixtures that help make sure that we’re ready for September.” He added, “I also think that playing September, October, November suits us better than playing a competitive game in June. The June fixtures are always the most difficult with players possibly needing procedures at the end of the season, where their head is, keeping them fit.” O’Neill further elaborated, “Our players predominantly play in the EFL [English Football League]. Their fixtures finish on 5 May and sometimes we’re asking them to play on 12 June so it’s very difficult. Not having that competitive game in June I think is a bonus for us.” The schedule for Northern Ireland’s qualifying matches is as follows: Thursday 4 September 2025 – Luxembourg v Northern Ireland, 19:45 BST Sunday 7 September – Germany or Italy v Northern Ireland, 19:45 BST Friday 10 October – Northern Ireland v Slovakia, 19:45 BST Monday 13 October – Northern Ireland v Germany or Italy, 19:45 BST Friday 14 November – Slovakia v Northern Ireland, 19:45 GMT Monday 17 November – Northern Ireland v Luxembourg, 19:45 GMT
