Approximately 1,000 food hampers are slated for distribution to vulnerable families and individuals affected by domestic violence across north-west England, coinciding with celebrations for Diwali. Deepa Parekh, a podcaster instrumental in leading this initiative, stated that the provisions would be delivered to six charitable organizations spanning Greater Manchester and Warrington. This aims to enable recipients to “enjoy in the spirit of Diwali, which is all about spreading love, light and happiness”. Ms. Parekh was one of 130 volunteers who convened at the Shree Bharatiya Mandal centre in Ashton-under-Lyne, Tameside, to assemble the hampers in anticipation of this week’s celebrations. This initiative is organized by the Diwali Basket Brigade, an organization established in Birmingham in 2018 with the mission of assisting individuals in disadvantaged situations. It has since expanded its operations to Manchester, Leicester, and London. The five-day festival itself signifies the triumph of enlightenment over evil and ignorance, typically observed around the new moon period in late October and November. Diwali, which translates to “row of lights” in Sanskrit, holds cultural and religious importance for Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, and Buddhists. Ms. Parekh commented: “It’s a huge event – two billion people around the world celebrate this.“It’s about eating great food, being with your family and exchanging gifts.
