Sierra Leone secured a win in the Breeders’ Cup Classic held at California’s Del Mar track, a race where City of Troy, competing for the last time, did not pose a challenge. The Derby winner, City of Troy, had been anticipated to conclude its career triumphantly in this esteemed US competition, recognized as North America’s most lucrative horse race with a prize fund of $7m (£5.4m). However, City of Troy encountered difficulties in its inaugural dirt race, while Sierra Leone advanced from a trailing position to secure the win at the picturesque San Diego coastal track. A rapid pace was established by the initial frontrunners, and Sierra Leone, a 6-1 shot, surged past the 5-2 favourite, Fierceness, during the concluding stretch. This achievement marked French jockey Flavien Prat’s sixth Breeders’ Cup victory and trainer Chad Brown’s 19th. Japan’s Forever Young, closing at 4-1 odds, finished in third place, followed by Newgate, ridden by Frankie Dettori, in fourth. City of Troy, under jockey Ryan Moore, ultimately placed eighth in what was its final race before transitioning to a breeding career, having previously achieved seven victories across nine races. His Irish trainer, Aidan O’Brien, commented: “He was left at the start where he lost three lengths and we didn’t have him prepared to break quickly enough. We thought we had, but we hadn’t. He was making up ground at the end, but Ryan had no chance.” O’Brien further stated: “He inspired us as a horse that could do well in the Classic. When you get back that far on a dirt surface, you can’t do anything about it.” O’Brien continues his pursuit of a first Classic victory, having made 18 attempts with 15 distinct horses. His nearest success occurred 24 years prior, when Giant’s Causeway was narrowly defeated by Tiznow. “We’re learning all the time,” the 55-year-old O’Brien added. “Hopefully we’ll try harder next year.” Prior to this win, Sierra Leone had experienced narrow defeats in its preceding four races, among them the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes. Trainer Chad Brown remarked: “I’m so happy for the horse because he’s come up short a few times. He’s been so consistent and he’s such an honest horse, one of the best I’ve ever had.”
