A 19-year-old individual has received a suspended prison sentence following threats to set fire to a mosque made in an online video and the utterance of Islamophobic insults from atop a phone box. Max Ritchings, residing in Haywards Heath, West Sussex, uploaded an Instagram story on 4 August, featuring news footage of civil unrest as a background, during which he swore and issued the threat. Later on the same evening, he stood upon a phone box situated near Brighton pier, where he shouted abusive remarks. During proceedings at Lewes Crown Court previously, Ritchings, having pleaded guilty to inciting violence online and to causing religiously aggravated harassment, was handed an 18-month prison sentence, which was suspended for a period of two years. Additionally, he was mandated to undertake 300 hours of unpaid community work and participate in 18 sessions of rehabilitation activities. The court was informed that Ritchings acknowledged developing an “obsessed” with online personalities. In her sentencing remarks, Judge Christine Laing KC stated: “It has to be viewed against the background of unrest… taking place [around] the country at that time and this was your contribution.” “One of those weighted numbers bringing fear to the streets of the United Kingdom at that time.” However, the judge recognized that despite committing “very serious and troubling offences”, Ritchings demonstrated self-reflection and an eagerness to comprehend his own mental health challenges.
