A series of parking restrictions have been confirmed in Leicester in anticipation of the city’s Diwali celebrations. On 31 October, Diwali day, tens of thousands of attendees are expected to gather on the Golden Mile in Belgrave for the festivities. Leicester City Council announced that parking would be suspended on 14 streets, effective from 06:00 GMT on that day. The authority further cautioned that any vehicle found to be causing an obstruction on any road within the Belgrave area would be subject to ticketing and towing. The council also stated that Belgrave Road itself would be closed, with all its junctions and connecting side roads becoming inaccessible between 17:00 and 21:30. Historically, the Hindu festival of light has been marked by two distinct events: a lights switch-on ceremony and a Diwali day event. However, the former will not take place this year, as the city council is implementing measures to save money. Parking suspensions are designated for a list of specific roads. Drivers have been advised that vehicles left on these particular streets will be subject to ticketing and towing. The Local Democracy Reporting Service reported that these measures are intended to ensure clear passage for emergency vehicles and council personnel throughout the area. These restrictions are scheduled to remain active until 22:00 on Diwali day.
