A proposal to expand a community centre located in Worcester has gained approval. The Comer Gardens Community Centre, which presently occupies the ground floor of the Comer Gardens Institute, is set to incorporate a neglected flat situated on the first floor of the same structure. The city council’s planning committee endorsed the renovation plans for this first-floor flat to be utilized by the centre during its meeting held on Thursday. Councillor Jill Desayrah expressed satisfaction regarding the growth of a community centre, while committee chair Karen Lewing commented that the loss of social housing was a “shame.” Ms. Lewing further stated: “I was really struck by the photographs of the existing flat – that is not the kind of place we want people to live in, is it?“It’s a shame to lose social housing but that was probably the wrong place for it and it was in poor condition.” Members of the committee voiced concerns regarding wheelchair accessibility to the building’s first floor. However, planning officers clarified that building regulations were not within the committee’s scope of consideration.
