Helen Morgan, the Member of Parliament for North Shropshire, has stated that the potential closure of the Oswestry Post Office branch would constitute a “devastating blow” to the town. This particular branch is among 115 nationwide facing potential closure, and Ms. Morgan has initiated an online petition to object to the proposed action. The Post Office organization is currently evaluating various options concerning its “Crown Post Offices,” which are standalone branches not situated within other retail establishments and are currently operating at a loss. Business owners in Oswestry have also voiced their apprehension, suggesting that such a closure could negatively affect their operations. Katrina Birch, representing The Dress Bridal Boutique, commented: “I think its going to have an impact on local businesses because obviously we use it for sending out parcels.” She further noted the Post Office’s essential role in providing supplies like parcel tape. Simon Calloway of the Get Connected mobile phone shop stated: “I think it’s invaluable the Post Office, not only for a business like ourselves, but also for the town.” He expressed worry regarding a potential reduction in footfall from individuals visiting the town specifically to utilize the Post Office services. The petition launched by Ms. Morgan urges local residents to articulate their “strong opposition to proposals to close Oswestry Post Office” and garnered over 1,000 signatures within its initial 24 hours. The Liberal Democrat MP highlighted that the Willow Street branch is the sole location within the Oswestry vicinity providing a comprehensive suite of services tailored for small businesses. She brought this matter before the House of Commons, where Gareth Thomas, the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Services, Small Business and Exports, informed her that although a definitive decision had not yet been reached, the Post Office was continuing with its consultation process. The Post Office, which is government-owned, operates 11,500 branches throughout the UK; the majority of these are franchises, with 115 designated as Crown Post Offices. Should these at-risk Crown Post Offices cease operations, their services could potentially be relocated to alternative retail outlets, such as WH Smith. The Post Office indicated that it has been compelled to contemplate these closures due to numerous challenges, including intense competition from competing parcel delivery services such as Evri, and a decline in the volume of letters being sent, which has consequently impacted the revenues of its branches.
