A new £47 million urgent and emergency care center at a hospital has experienced a delay in its opening because of a malfunctioning boiler. This advanced facility, located at Scarborough Hospital on Woodlands Drive, was initially scheduled to commence operations last month. However, it is now anticipated to become fully operational no sooner than “early spring.” According to a spokesperson for the trust, the postponement resulted from one of the four boilers failing during testing. This necessitates its replacement before the contractors can transfer the building. The spokesperson indicated that a new boiler has been ordered, but its “manufacture and installation” will “take some time,” making it impossible to provide a specific timeline for the completion of the work. The trust stated, “We recognise that it’s disappointing as everyone is keen to get into the new space as soon as possible, but it’s important that we don’t move until we’re ready as it’s a complex process to transfer these services from the old areas into the new.” The Urgent and Emergency Care Centre (UECC), which constitutes the most substantial capital investment by the York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, is projected to nearly double the current available space at Scarborough Hospital, located on Woodlands Drive. The facility will also feature a new CT scanner and two new X-ray machines. It includes a secure room designed for highly infectious diseases, and the entire structure can be safely partitioned into two distinct sections in the event of a widespread outbreak, like Covid-19. The York and Scarborough Hospitals charity has raised over £800,000 to finance various projects at the center, as reported by the Local Democracy Reporting Service. These funds are intended to improve the patient experience, specifically by establishing four outdoor terraces and offering accommodation suites for family members.
