Storm Darragh is generating disruptions throughout the North East, impacting travel and leading to event cancellations. While the area has avoided the most severe effects of the storm, a yellow weather warning for wind and rain persists. Christmas-related events have been significantly impacted, with fairs in Stockton and North Shields, along with a Santa’s Grotto in Saltburn, being canceled. Due to roads being obstructed by fallen trees, motorists have received advice to allocate additional time for their travels. Northern Powergrid has received reports of numerous power outages, primarily concentrated in Northumberland. On Teesside, vehicles have been rerouted from the A689 route to Hartlepool because of substantial debris on the road surface. Additionally, fallen trees have resulted in the closure of one direction of Flatts Lane, situated near Normanby. Cleveland Police reported extensive traffic queues and advised drivers to stay away from the vicinity. In Tyneside, Blaydon Bridge on the A1 motorway is inaccessible to high-sided vehicles. The Shields Ferry service has been suspended, with its operator, Nexus, confirming that a substitute bus service is operating via the Tyne Tunnel. On Friday, DFDS declared the suspension of its ferry services between Newcastle and Amsterdam, effective until Sunday, citing “adverse weather conditions.” Beamish Museum also released a statement expressing regret for its necessary closure during what is typically one of its busiest periods. The museum stated: “We’re saddened to have to make this decision, but the safety of our visitors, staff and volunteers must always come first.” For updates, follow BBC North East on X, Facebook, Nextdoor, and Instagram.
