During the search for a diver reported missing in Scapa Flow, Orkney, a body has been located. The individual, identified as a commercial scallop diver residing in the islands, was initially reported missing on November 27. Following his disappearance, Coastguard helicopters and local council tugs participated in the search operation. While formal identification of the body is pending, the family of the missing diver has been notified of its discovery. A spokesperson for Police Scotland stated: “Around 17:30 on Wednesday 27 November, 2024, we were made aware of a diver missing in Scapa Flow.”Around 11:00 on Friday 6 December, 2024, the body of a man was found in Churchill Causeway, Orkney.”Formal identification is yet to take place but the family of the diver have been informed. “There do not appear to be any suspicious circumstances and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.” The Churchill Barriers, which connect four islands to the Orkney mainland, were constructed in the 1940s to safeguard the waters of Scapa Flow against German U-boats. Their construction was commissioned by First Lord of the Admiralty Winston Churchill following the sinking of the British vessel HMS Royal Oak. Scapa Flow served as the Royal Navy’s primary naval base throughout World War One and World War Two. The area’s waters also contain the wrecks of the German fleet, which were scuttled in 1919.
