An individual was detected driving at 84mph (135km/h) within a 30mph (48km/h) speed restricted area. This speeding vehicle was identified by Essex Police during a road safety initiative conducted in the western part of the county. The police force reported that a total of nine drivers were found to be exceeding the speed limit, with one of these individuals observed viewing a program on a screen. These drivers may face legal proceedings. Law enforcement personnel conducted patrols on Sewardstone Road, located in Waltham Abbey, and Epping New Road, situated in Buckhurst Hill. Sgt Will Wilsher commented: “What officers witnessed were offences that are not only against the law, they’re a direct result of poor decision making, disregard for the law and actions undermining their own safety and the safety of others.” He further stated: “But they are the very drivers we want to target so we can also highlight the issues and educate how they can be better drivers, to make sure everyone is safe.” Essex Police also noted that another driver, traveling at 42mph (67km/h) while speeding, was observed “watching a programme on a large mounted tablet-type screen”. Additionally, a food delivery driver, who was reported for careless driving following an incident where a moped moved into the path of another vehicle, was found to be uninsured. The police indicated that these patrols were conducted under the Vision Zero initiative, which seeks to eliminate fatal road casualties by 2040 or earlier. The Safer Essex Roads Partnership reported that 41 individuals died on the county’s roads during 2023.
