Kelvin Thomas, chairman of Northampton, has stated that the club will take its time in selecting a replacement for Jon Brady, who recently resigned. Thomas confirmed that interim manager Ian Sampson is a strong contender for the permanent position. Speaking to BBC Radio Northampton, Thomas disclosed that 75 applications have been received since Brady’s departure last week, encompassing candidates from the Championship level down to non-league football. While the Cobblers plan to carefully develop a shortlist, Thomas acknowledged Sampson’s expressed interest in the role, noting he is well-placed to make his case. The 56-year-old began his interim tenure successfully, as Northampton secured a 2-1 victory over Peterborough United in the Nene derby on Monday night. Thomas commented, “Sammo has indicated an interest but we haven’t sat down fully and talked. But as caretaker manager you have the best possible interview going every Saturday.” He further clarified, “That is not to say if he wins the next few games or gets some really good results the job is his. We haven’t made that decision. But it’s not that the job isn’t his… we haven’t discounted him.” If Sampson is appointed, it would mark his second period managing the Cobblers, having previously held the position from September 2009 to March 2011. Thomas conceded that the former Cobblers defender might perceive an element of “unfinished business” given his previous dismissal. Thomas added, “I was involved at Oxford at the time when he was sacked last time but most people at the football club have said it was a bit harsh and a bit too soon.” Sampson’s initial match since Brady’s unexpected departure resulted in a significant win against Posh, moving Northampton out of the relegation zone to 17th place in League One. The team is scheduled to play Rotherham United on Saturday, with the Millers currently in 20th position, followed by another match against Peterborough on Tuesday in the Vertu Trophy. Thomas stated, “On Monday night he brought a calmness to the situation and the staff and players seemed to like it. It is good to see the players have had a bit of a lift.” He concluded, “If he keeps winning football matches he will put himself in a great shape and in the shop window.” Post navigation Manchester United’s Luke Shaw Resumes Training After Three-Month Injury Layoff Motherwell Readies for ‘Electric’ Rangers Encounter
