New York City has dismissed head coach Nick Cushing, who took charge of the club in 2022, amidst reports of interest from Women’s Super League club Arsenal. Cushing, who previously guided Manchester City to the WSL title in 2016 during his seven-year tenure, is reportedly among the candidates being considered to replace Jonas Eidevall in north London. Earlier this month, Cushing had stated there was no contact with the Gunners and affirmed his intention to remain with the Major League Soccer club in 2025; however, New York City has now opted to move in a different direction. New York City released a statement regarding the decision: “While we are incredibly appreciative for all he has done for the club, at this current time, we believe it’s best to move the team in a new direction as we plan for the 2025 season and beyond,” the club stated. “We would like to sincerely thank Nick for his contributions and wish him and his family all the very best in their future endeavours.” Arsenal has been without a permanent manager since Eidevall’s resignation on 15 October, which occurred after a defeat by Chelsea at Emirates Stadium. Under the leadership of interim manager Renee Slegers, the team has achieved six victories from seven matches and secured a spot in the Women’s Champions League quarter-finals. The 40-year-old Englishman initially joined New York City as an assistant manager in 2020 before being appointed head coach in 2022. His departure follows a season in which he led the team to a sixth-placed finish in the league and reached the MLS play-off semi-finals.
