Chief football writer Phil McNulty has been responding to reader questions. NMP inquired whether Manchester City might be facing repercussions for not refreshing an aging squad more quickly. NMP pointed out that the club’s recent transfer windows have been uneventful, that Savinho has not yet made a significant impact, and that Ilkay Gundogan is clearly not performing at his former level. NMP noted that this pattern has been observed with other successful teams and asked if a substantial overhaul is required. Phil McNulty agreed with this assessment. He stated that the squad “has been allowed to grow too old together,” emphasizing that even the most successful players and teams necessitate renewal, especially after accumulating extensive playing time over many years. He also suggested that it can be challenging for players, being human, to maintain the same drive for success each season after winning numerous trophies. McNulty further conceded that the transfer strategy has been flawed. He suggested that City might now regret not holding firm when Cole Palmer wished to depart, and that Julian Alvarez was permitted to leave without a replacement being secured. Regarding new signings, McNulty observed that Kalvin Phillips proved to be a failure, while Matheus Nunes “simply has not done it yet.” While expressing profound admiration for Gundogan, who was “instrumental in so many triumphs at Manchester City,” McNulty commented that the 34-year-old’s return from Barcelona “looks like a season too far.” McNulty anticipates that City will address these issues and undertake active measures to rebuild the team, initially in January and then more significantly next summer to overhaul the side. Adam Bateman then asked what more would need to occur for Pep Guardiola to be dismissed. Phil McNulty humorously replied, “Maybe losing his next 40 games?” He then asserted that it is unrealistic to expect Manchester City to sack “the greatest coach of the modern era.” McNulty added that Guardiola will determine his own departure from Etihad Stadium and is clearly not leaving yet, having just signed a new two-year contract. Guardiola is credited with bringing “unprecedented success to Manchester City” and will be entrusted with the responsibility of building what he hopes will be the club’s next formidable team.
