Four educational institutions within Worcestershire have each formally committed to an initiative aimed at becoming entirely smartphone-free. The headteachers of Kempsey Primary, Welland Primary, Hanley Swan Primary, and Hanley Castle High collectively dispatched a letter to parents, requesting them to consider refraining from providing their children with a smartphone until they reach at least Year 9. Bryony Baynes, the head teacher at Kempsey, indicated her awareness of children as young as five years old possessing smartphones. “We’re not saying never have a smartphone,” she said. “We’re just saying think about when you give it.” These four schools, which are affiliated with the Hanley and Upton Educational Trust, are endorsing the Smartphone Free Childhood campaign group. This organization encourages parents to postpone giving smartphones to their children. Ms Baynes disclosed that she recently addressed an incident involving a WhatsApp group among a cohort of Year 6 girls, which was generating issues by fostering jealousy. “None if this would have started if it hadn’t been for the WhatsApp group,” said Ms Baynes. “In my day…you left your problems at school and you went home.” “I know from my own children the access to social media through their phones feeds anxieties, lack of confidence.” Ms Baynes stated that, to date, parents appear to be receptive to the concept. “I haven’t had anyone throwing smartphones at me as I get out of my car in the morning,” she said. The school plans to commence discussions with children regarding smartphones and social media in the upcoming new year. “It’s about educating them as much as it is about talking to parents”, said Ms Baynes.
