A decade-long masterplan includes the “re-imagining” of a town centre. Under the initiative proposed by Knowsley council, existing structures in Huyton, Merseyside, are slated for demolition, to be succeeded by hotels, offices, residences, a library, and a village green. The council stated that public transportation systems would be modernized, generating 1,700 employment opportunities and injecting up to £50m in additional expenditure into the local economy. The authority further noted that the proposals aim for “a complete redevelopment which would create a vibrant and thriving re-imagined centre”. As reported by the Local Democracy Reporting Service, councillors are expected to authorize an initial £3.6m at an upcoming meeting to advance their plans to the planning phase, after which they will seek to obtain further financing. Over seven acres of land within Huyton town centre are currently occupied by council structures erected in the 1970s, which are now considered unsuitable for their intended use. The council’s comprehensive plan involves the demolition of these structures to free up space for urban development, encompassing contemporary, energy-efficient office buildings. The initial phase of plans for Huyton comprises 72 new one and two-bedroom apartments designated for affordable rent, a 130-bedroom branded hotel, retail areas, a new village green, and the repositioning of the war memorial. Additionally, a new ground-level car park, a library, a community hub situated in the core of the village centre, and recreational facilities have been put forward. Knowsley Council indicated that subsequent phases might incorporate additional office premises or as many as 300 more residential units.
