An Indian actor, Allu Arjun, a prominent figure in the Telugu film industry, was taken into custody and subsequently granted bail following a fatal crowd crush at the premiere of his movie. The incident, which occurred last week in Hyderabad city during a surprise appearance by the actor, resulted in the death of a 39-year-old woman and critical injuries to her son. Initially, a court ordered the actor to be held in police custody for 14 days; however, a high court reversed this decision hours later, granting him bail. Authorities had initiated legal proceedings against the actor, his security personnel, and the theatre’s management on accusations of culpable homicide. The theatre’s owner and two staff members had previously been arrested. Police officers went to the actor’s residence on Friday, apprehending him before he was presented before a local court. While incidents involving significant crowds are frequently documented in India, often attributed to inadequate safety protocols and ineffective crowd control, the arrest of high-profile celebrities in such circumstances is uncommon. The film in question, “Pushpa 2,” is the much-anticipated follow-up to the successful 2021 movie “Pushpa: The Rise,” which premiered in cinemas earlier this month. According to police, Allu Arjun entered the theatre via the main entrance at 21:30 local time (16:00GMT). Hyderabad police chief CV Anand stated, “There was no intimation from the side of the theatre management or the actor’s team that they would be visiting.” A police statement indicated, “His personal security team started pushing the public which further aggravated the situation as there was already a huge gathering at the theatre.” Arjun’s legal representative argued in court that the actor bore no responsibility for the event, asserting that the crush occurred on a separate floor from his location. Police reported that amidst the ensuing disorder, a 39-year-old woman and her nine-year-old son were extracted from the crowd after experiencing “suffocated” sensations. They received initial medical attention before being transported to a hospital. The woman succumbed to her injuries at that facility, while her son was transferred to another hospital where he continues to receive care. Following the event, Allu Arjun expressed on X that he was “heartbroken by the tragic incident.” He conveyed, “My heartfelt condolences go out to the grieving family during this unimaginably difficult time. I want to assure them they are not alone in this pain and will meet the family personally.” Subsequently, he declared financial aid of 2.5m rupees ($29,480; £23,346) for the woman’s family and committed to covering her son’s medical costs. Mythri Movie Makers, the production company responsible for the film, also issued a statement, asserting, “We are committed to standing by them and extending all possible support during this difficult time.” Post navigation Daughter Seeks Answers Ten Years After Father’s Disappearance Guernsey Police Foresee Resourcing Challenges for New Domestic Abuse Powers
