This weekend’s Scottish Premiership schedule is condensed due to the League Cup final, yet significant outcomes remain possible. Key matchups include Motherwell against Dundee United, and Don Cowie leading his Ross County team to face Hibernian. Several important storylines are highlighted below. A mere two points separate Motherwell, currently in fifth place, from Dundee United, who sit one position higher. Consequently, a win for Motherwell at home would alter the league standings, while United aims to preserve their current position with either a victory or a draw. The Tangerines have remained undefeated in their last five matches, and Motherwell prepared for this encounter by securing a crucial away win against St Mirren in Paisley last Saturday. Motherwell, known as the Steelmen, emerged victorious in their most recent league fixture against Dundee United. Additionally, Motherwell secured a 2-1 win in this season’s League Cup match between the two clubs. Even with a victory, Dundee United cannot overtake Rangers, who are both the current League Cup holders and finalists. However, a win would allow them to narrow the gap to Rangers and to second-placed Aberdeen, with the latter not scheduled to play this weekend. Makenzie Kirk enhanced his growing reputation last weekend by scoring the opening goal during St Johnstone’s 1-1 draw against Aberdeen, following an error by James McGarry. This marked the 20-year-old forward’s fifth goal across all competitions this season, a tally that includes one goal scored for Saints’ under-20s team in the SPFL Trust Trophy. Kirk is emulating his father, Andy, who had a playing career in Scottish football, scoring for Hearts and Dunfermline Athletic, and also represented Northern Ireland. Andy Kirk is currently a member of the coaching staff at St Johnstone. The younger Kirk’s next focus is St Mirren, who are set to play this Saturday in Perth after experiencing a defeat in their previous match. A four-point difference separates St Johnstone, positioned ninth, from St Mirren, who are seventh. With sixth-placed Dundee not participating in matches this weekend, both teams have a chance to improve their league standing. Ross County, currently in eighth place, finds itself ahead of several prominent Premiership competitors, including the two major clubs from Edinburgh. Nevertheless, Don Cowie’s team has suffered defeats in their last two outings, conceding a total of eight goals to Glasgow’s two major clubs during those matches. Should they incur another loss against Hibernian at Easter Road, the Staggies risk being drawn into more precarious league positions. In October, they played to a 0-0 draw against Hibs in Dingwall, and they have remained undefeated in their last three encounters with the Leith-based club. Cowie’s objective is to orchestrate County’s first victory at Easter Road in 23 months, thereby preventing any potential advancement by Kilmarnock, St Johnstone, and/or Hearts.
