An officer with Devon and Cornwall Police, who had received commendations for life-saving actions, has been issued a community order subsequent to being apprehended for shoplifting. PC Christopher Spence, aged 44, residing in Abbotsham, north Devon, attended Exeter Crown Court on Tuesday. He had previously admitted guilt to a theft charge stemming from an incident at a Bideford shop on February 12. Judge Stephen Climie stated that Spence had forfeited his reputation and the esteem of his peers and co-workers. The court was informed that CCTV footage showed Spence putting multiple items into his rucksack, yet he only paid for a single product, which he openly carried as he exited the establishment. The value of the stolen merchandise was approximately £30. The officer, who was not on duty when the offense occurred, is currently facing misconduct proceedings within the police force and has been suspended from active duty since his apprehension. Warren Robinson, representing the defense, commented: “It’s a tragedy of his own making. He has thrown himself under the bus.” Robinson further noted that the father-of-three had, throughout his police career, rescued individuals attempting suicide and others from dangerous incoming tides, earning numerous commendations for these actions. Judge Stephen Climie remarked that Spence had undergone a “moment of madness” that would lead to the conclusion of his extensive police career. He reiterated that Spence had forfeited his good name and the respect of his friends and colleagues. Spence was mandated to complete 150 hours of unpaid work as part of an 18-month community order, in addition to paying £300 in court costs and £30 in compensation. Superintendent Toby Davies, the commander for North and West Devon, expressed that the force was “deeply disappointed” and aimed to “assure the community that the action of one individual does not reflect the values or integrity of our local officers”. He further stated: “As we move forwards, we will continue to be open and transparent, and hold ourselves accountable, and we will work hard to ensure that the actions of one individual does not undermine the confidence and trust we have worked so hard to build.” Post navigation Portsmouth Retail Workers Detail Assaults and Unanswered Shoplifting Complaints Proposed Penalties for Public Urination and Dog Fouling
