Pep Guardiola, who became Manchester City’s manager in 2016, has stated that he requested an opportunity from the club’s leadership to reverse their current performance decline, indicating he would depart if unsuccessful. Guardiola is currently experiencing the most challenging period of his managerial career, as City suffered five consecutive defeats across all competitions before relinquishing a three-goal advantage to draw against Feyenoord in the Champions League during the week. Several injuries to crucial players, notably Ballon d’Or recipient Rodri, who is sidelined for the remainder of the season, have further complicated his situation. Since his arrival at Etihad Stadium in 2016, Guardiola has secured 18 trophies, among them six Premier League titles within seven years and the Champions League. However, the former manager of Barcelona and Bayern Munich, despite recently signing a new two-year contract, stated that this agreement does not assure his continued tenure if performance does not get better. He remarked, “I don’t want to stay in the place if I feel like I’m a problem,” adding, “I don’t want to stay here just because the contract is there.” “My chairman knows it. I said to him, ‘Give me the chance to try to come back’, and especially when everybody comes back [from injury] and see what happens.” He continued, “After, if I’m not able to do it, we have to change because, of course, [the previous] nine years are dead.” Guardiola emphasized, “More than ever I ask to my hierarchy, give me the chance. “Will it be easy for me now? No. I have the feeling that still I have a job to do and I want to do it.” Current Premier League champions City currently occupy fourth place in the league standings and are scheduled to play against leaders Liverpool on Sunday; a loss would place them 11 points adrift of the Merseysiders. Guardiola expressed dissatisfaction with the club’s standing but maintained confidence that the players are capable of reversing their fortunes. He stated, “I don’t enjoy it at all, I don’t like it,” adding, “I sleep not as good as I slept when I won every game. The sound, the smell, the perfume is not good enough right now.” “But I’m the same person who won four Premier Leagues in a row. I was happier because I ate better, lived better, but I was not thinking differently from who I am.” He also noted, “The people say, ‘Yeah, it’s the end of that.’ Maybe, but we are in November. We will see what happens until the end.” “What can you do? Cry for that? You don’t stay long – many, many years without fighting. That is what you try to look for.” Concluding, he asked, “Why should we not believe? Why should it not happen with us?”
