Wolverhampton Wanderers chairman Jeff Shi has publicly endorsed manager Gary O’Neil, who has been under scrutiny, while simultaneously acknowledging that an improvement in the team’s performance is “essential.” The head coach has faced increasing pressure due to the team securing only two victories in their initial 15 matches. A sequence of three consecutive defeats appeared to place him in a precarious position, yet Wolves are continuing to back the 41-year-old ahead of their upcoming Saturday fixture against fellow struggling team Ipswich. In his column for the Wolverhampton Express & Star, external, Shi stated, “I remain grateful to Gary for stepping into such a demanding situation just days before the beginning of a new season [when he replaced Julen Lopetegui in August 2023], and for his commitment to the club every day since then.” He further added, “While he knows that improving our results quickly is essential for everyone associated with the football club, we are united in supporting him as all of us strive to make that progress happen.” Currently, Wolves occupy the second-to-last position in the Premier League standings. A victory in their next game would elevate them three points clear of Ipswich and place them just one point behind Crystal Palace, who are in 17th place and are scheduled to play Brighton on Sunday. Shi continued, reflecting on the club’s history under current ownership: “Since Fosun’s ownership began in 2016, Wolves have seen incredible highs and endured tough lows.” He emphasized, “Throughout this time, success or failure has never been down to a single individual – it has always been about the collective. Football is, at its core, a team sport, and that principle extends beyond the pitch.” Addressing the club’s operational philosophy, Shi remarked, “Business sense plays a key role in all our decisions, with our strategy and operations constantly evolving to adapt to the ever-changing football industry and global landscape.” Concluding his remarks, Shi acknowledged challenges: “Of course, this year, injuries to key players have also been particularly challenging, and I hope for better fortune in 2025. Yet, it is during testing times like these that the true character of a team is revealed.” Post navigation Craig Gordon Addresses Hearts’ Struggles, Urges Performance Amidst Doubts An Unaddressed Aspect of Aston Villa’s Current Status
