Torquay currently trails the leader of National League South by three points. Paul Wotton, manager of Torquay United, expressed his extreme satisfaction, stating he “couldn’t be happier” with the team’s initial performance this season. Following Torquay’s financial difficulties, Wotton undertook the task of assembling a completely new squad during the summer transfer window, having arrived from Truro City. Despite the significant overhaul involving 22 new player acquisitions, the Gulls have achieved a commendable start to the season, securing eight victories in their 14 matches, which has propelled them to fourth place in National League South. Wotton commented on the team’s current standing, stating, “We’re a third of the way through the season, I couldn’t be happier with where they are.” He further emphasized the ongoing requirement for development: “We still need to improve, we know that. I need to improve, players need to improve, we all need to improve constantly.” Wotton added, “If we don’t strive to do that every day then we’ll never get to where we want to get to.” Regarding the summer’s player acquisition process, Wotton remarked, “Recruitment in the summer was tough. Recruitment’s always tough anyway if you want the best players or players that you think will do well for your football club.” Concluding his thoughts on the squad, he stated, “So I am happy with them. They train hard, they’re good lads, so overall, very pleased.” Jordan Young, a recent acquisition, marked his debut last week by scoring a goal following his transfer from Yeovil Town for an undisclosed fee. Wotton indicated that Young’s presence had motivated the other members of the squad to elevate their performance levels. Wotton further commented, “I know how good a player he is and I think he’s come in and he’s been fresh, given us a little spark.” He continued, “I think other players have reacted to that as well.” Wotton elaborated on this dynamic: “Whenever a good player comes in and trains well and plays well I think other players around him try and come up to those levels as well.” He concluded by saying, “Now he’s finally in the building were really pleased with him, so far, so good, but it’s just the start for him.”
