John Souttar’s satisfaction with Rangers’ performance against Olympiakos was tempered by disappointment that they returned home with one Europa League point instead of three. After failing to convert two significant opportunities for the opening goal, Cyriel Dessers compensated by scoring a well-deserved equalizer in Greece. This occurred after Ayoub El Kaabi had put the home side in the lead during the second half. The 1-1 outcome leaves Philippe Clement’s squad with seven points at the midpoint of the league phase, a total that Scotland defender Souttar believes should be higher. “It’s a really difficult place to go to and that’s a top team we played,” said Souttar. “They obviously won the Conference League last season and I thought we stayed together as a team. We stuck to the gameplan, and it’s about moments in these games, and as much as we are pleased there is a slight frustration because we thought we’d done enough for three points. We’d probably have taken one point going there, but it’s slightly frustrating but we have to be pleased with that performance.” He added, “I’d say this was a good performance from the whole team defensively. To a man, midfielders, attackers, we defend as a unit and to pick up points in this competition against top players from top teams you have to defend as a unit, and we did that on Thursday night.” Rangers’ chances of qualifying for the knockout stage remain active, though they face a challenging schedule. This includes away fixtures against Nice and Manchester United, a home match versus Tottenham, and concludes with Union Saint-Gilloise visiting Glasgow. “I think we just got to take every game as it comes and if we play like we did on Thursday night, being compact, working for each other, and doing the hard yards, and then taking our taking our moments, we will be fine,” Souttar further stated. “They’re going to have moments, it’s important everyone stays together, and that’s what we did on Thursday night.” Sandi Toksvig is accompanied by Gyles Brandreth, Lulu, Emmanuel Sonubi, and Alan Davies.
