Official records indicate that thousands of individuals in Barnsley are awaiting council housing, highlighting a significant imbalance where demand considerably exceeds available supply. Since April 2021, Barnsley Council has secured 57 new residences. The council aims to construct or purchase over 21,500 properties by 2033, encompassing both affordable units within new developments and existing homes designated for social rent. Presently, the waiting list for a council property includes over 5,500 residents. Berneslai Homes, the local housing provider, processes approximately 5,000 applications annually. In an interview with the Local Democracy Reporting Service, Robin Franklin, a cabinet member, stated that the council acknowledges the difficulties encountered by local families and individuals seeking accommodation. He affirmed, “We want our residents and communities to have a safe and secure home that suits their needs and lifestyle.” Mr. Franklin further explained that the council’s strategy for new construction and property acquisition is designed to boost housing development significantly within the coming five years. The local plan established by the authority outlines an objective to construct or procure an additional 21,546 residences between the years 2019 and 2033. The cabinet spokesperson for regeneration and culture commented, “Through our lettings policy, we aim to address supply and demand to make sure we support those in most need first.” The spokesperson added, “We publish transparent information about waiting lists on the Berneslai Homes website, which includes an interactive tool where people can work out their likely wait time.”
